All About Spades with Jokers: Rules, Tips, and Strategies
Understanding Spades with Jokers
While many card games tend to omit the Jokers, there are certain variations of classic trick-taking card games that involve them in the gameplay (and the same can be said for Deuces). This includes variations of Spades.
In these instances, the Spades are considered the highest-value cards in play, ranked as follows: Joker, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2.
How to Play Spades with Jokers and Deuces
Essential Spades Rules with Jokers
Fortunately, the rules of gameplay do not alter all that much when playing Spades with Jokers.
Whether you’re playing online or in person, the rules are as follows:
- A standard deck of 52 cards is dealt out evenly among players. In these cases, the Joker cards are not removed.
- Players are then given the chance to bid on the number of tricks they believe they will win from 0-13. The highest bidder then plays the first card.
- In each round, the highest-played card of the led set wins. However, if the Joker is played, it automatically wins the check, as it is the highest-ranking card regardless of the set.
- Players earn points for each trick they win, with additional points awarded for correct bids.
- A player wins when they have secured 13 tricks or 260 points.
Which Joker is the Highest in Spades?
There are typically two Jokers included within a pack of cards. While they may appear similar at first glance, they tend to be slightly different in design. For example, you may notice that one is in full-color and the other in grayscale or vary in size.
While this does not change the value of each card (especially as they are the highest ranking in the game), if they are played against each other, the full-colour or Big Joker will win the trick.
Exploring the Spades Game with Jokers
There are many reasons why you may be considering incorporating the Joker cards into your next Spades Game. Firstly, this is a great way to bring a bit of variation to your standard gameplay, which can be a lot of fun if you’ve been playing spades for some time.
Furthermore, introducing new cards often requires you to develop new strategies in order to win the most tricks and beat your opponents. After all, it is a little less predictable than a standard game.
However, it is generally advised that you familarize yourself with the rules of the game by playing a standard game of spades first. This means that you’ll feel much more confident when introducing new rules and strategies.
